RATON SSR270 PHOTO ALBUM
The following three pictures were provided by ENC(SS) Cliff Thorpe 1960-1963.  The first one below is the USS R-1 which his father served on.  The second is Thorpe making Chief on 15 July 1960 aboard the Raton.  The third is the 1962 dependents cruise on the Raton at 120 feet.  EMC(SS) Thomason on left, ENC(SS) Thorpe in middle and MM1(SS) Mitchell on right.  The rest unidentified.
The following five pictures were provided by IC2(SS) Herman "Joe" Carlson.  I believe the damage is from when the USS Mackenzie ran over the Raton. The After Trim Tank is where the blades of the propeller were inserted.  The After Trim Tank vent overflowed when the prop cut into it.  Joe states "This fact I can attest to because I was on the air manifold at the time and shut the inboard vent.  If the prop had cut approximately two feet forward it would have opened the Stern Room to flooding and the consensus is that the boat would not have survived.  Has anyone seen the transcript of the investigation board findings?  I think that would be something to review".
